Ford Aerostar Tires
Introduced in 1986, the Aerostar was Ford’s first minivan; it borrowed many components from the Ford Ranger pickup and was available with all-wheel drive in later generations. While the Aerostar may have been behind the curve with a RWD truck-based layout, it was also the first minivan to be powered exclusively by V6 engines and the first to offer AWD drivetrains. Despite a rather old-fashioned design, the Aerostar used extensive weight-saving technology such as an aluminum driveshaft and wheels and plastic fuel tank, hood, and liftgate doors, with fuel economy that was comparable to a lot of small cars of the time. Interestingly, the Aerostar was named Truck of the Year by Motor Trend in 1990. The Aerostar was available in Base, XL, XLT, XLT Plus, and Eddie Bauer trim levels. Ford announced the discontinuation of the Aerostar in 1994, but consumer outcry intervened and it was sold concurrently with the Windstar minivan until 1997.
Here at SimpleTire, our team has gone through the catalog and rounded up the best Ford Aerostar tires, then ranked them in Best/Great/Good order. We then used our SimpleScore system to determine a numerical value for the categories of traction, handling, and longevity for each tire. Ready? Let’s go in for a closer look:
1. Toyo Extensa A/S II: Best All-Season tire
Let’s kick this list off with the Toyo Extensa A/S II, an all-season tire that’s made a great impression on us for some time thanks to its great value and performance. The Extensa A/S II is designed around an advanced silica-rich rubber compound that delivers lower rolling resistance and fuel efficiency, along with great wear properties and reliable traction in wet weather. Toyo’s innovative design for the Extensa A/S II incorporates tread ribs that are optimized to equalize and distribute stress and pressure across the tire’s tread face, meaning more uniform wear along with an improvement in cornering and braking performance. Wet-weather traction gets a boost with wide circumferential grooves that resist hydroplaning on wet roads by channeling water behind the tire’s contact patch. When the snow starts to pile up, there’s a dense network of sipes that multiplies the tire’s surface area and gives you the traction you need to make it easier to get through wet or wintry conditions. We also took note of the nondirectional, symmetric tread design of the Extensa A/S II, making it easier to cross-rotate tires for even wear. Toyo backs the Extensa A/S II with a 75,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty.
2. General Altimax RT45: Best All-Season tire
Next up is a tire we’ve been consistently impressed with: the General Altimax RT45. The Altimax RT45 might come in at a lower price point, but don’t be put off by that because this is a tire that represents great value and can punch far above its weight class. It’s a tire that consistently delivers the performance you need in all kinds of weather conditions, with an all-season tread design that’s been proven on the test course and in the real world. General Tire backs the Altimax RT45 with either a 65,000 or 75,000 mile warranty (depending on tire size), and we calculated an outstanding 9.9 SimpleScore for longevity. Year-round traction, low noise, a compliant ride, and braking and handling are all consistent and predictable – these are the strong points of the Altimax RT45, allowing us to award the tire a 9.0 traction score. We also figured out a very respectable SimpleScore of 8.7 as far as handling, thanks to road feedback and steering response that all get a boost from a pattern of sipes, angled and lateral grooves, and a solid center rib. Another great and innovative feature of this tire is the visual alignment indicator, allowing a driver to keep an eye out for excessive wear or alignment that’s out of spec. When tread depth reaches a minimum of 2/32”, the words “Replace Tire” are molded into the tread and are visible only when the tread wears down to that point (minimum tread depth in most states). Additionally, select sizes of the Altimax RT45 are available with a great-looking outlined white letter sidewall.
3. Bridgestone Blizzak WS90: Best Winter tire
Now we get to the Bridgestone Blizzak WS90, our pick for the best winter tire for the Ford Aerostar. The Blizzak WS90 is a studless tire that has the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certification for severe winter service and is designed as an update from the Blizzak, with a few significant improvements. Its winter tread compound incorporates multicell technology that repels water and tiny bite particles for enhanced friction on snow, slush, and ice, yet it stays flexible for dependable grip on sub-freezing days (think about the difference between a hard rubber hockey puck or a flexible lug-sole rubber boot on ice). When you need control and traction, the Blizzak WS90’s winter tread incorporates a solid center rib with large tread blocks and a pattern of circumferential and angled grooves. It multiplies surface area with hair-thin sipes that give you the extra grip to chew through snow and slush. We give this tire an outstanding SimpleScore of 9.6 for traction. Its contact patch is redesigned to put more rubber on the road, and tread block stiffness is enhanced for sharp steering response, braking, and cornering for a SimpleScore of 8.7 in the handling department. That optimized footprint is also designed for better wear properties even though the Blizzak WS90 doesn’t have a mileage warranty (most winter tires don’t), we give a SimpleScore of 8.6 for longevity.
While these are the best Ford Aerostar tires on the market, there are plenty of other tires to consider:
4. Nexen N’Priz AH8: Great All-Season tire
Next up on our list, we’ve got the Nexen N’Priz AH8, a performance-oriented all-season tire that comes in at an affordable price point, making it a great pick for a Ford Aerostar. Nexen designed the N’Priz AH8 with a wear-resistant silica-enhanced rubber formulation and extra tread depth. Nexen is confident enough to stand by this tire with a 70,000 mile warranty – which is enough for us to give the N’Priz AH8 a SimpleScore of 9.6 for longevity. We calculated a SimpleScore of 8.4 for traction, thanks to an all-season tread design and dense network of sipes as well as that extra-deep tread depth. We’re also pretty impressed with this tire’s handling properties with stable internal construction, the stickier silica-rich rubber formulation for better mechanical grip with the pavement, and a tread design that all help to offer great cornering, braking, road manners, and steering response. For such direct and precise handling, we noted a SimpleScore of 8.8.
5. Kumho Solus TA11: Good All-Season tire
We’ll wrap this list up with the Kumho Solus TA11. Kumho products have been consistently making a strong impression on the SimpleTire team and the Solus TA11 is no exception; this premium all-season tire gets a composite SimpleScore of 8.6. Road manners, driver feedback, cornering, and steering response are all superlative with the Solus TA11 thanks to Kumho’s exclusive ESCOT internal construction package that balances tension and stresses and its specialized, advanced carbon-rich tread compound, for a SimpleScore of 8.3 for handling. SimpleScore of 9.1 for longevity is thanks in part to that long-wearing tread compound and internal design; Kumho backs the Solus TA11 with a 75,000 mile warranty. Its asymmetric all-season tread pattern is designed with a dense network of sipes, notched shoulders, and deep circumferential grooves, channeling water away from the tire’s contact patch to deliver dependable year-round grip and mitigate hydroplaning. SimpleScore for traction: 8.5. The Solus TA11 is quiet on the road, too, with a whole package of features that are designed to cancel road noise and improve heat dispersion at highway speed.
